Nicole Trovato, Entry #1, First Day / Poster Session / Keynote Speaker!

View from the lab
Yesterday was my first day in the Al Alam Research Lab, which is part of the Saban Research Institute, which is part of the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). After a great deal of traveling and paperwork I finally was able to arrive at the lab and meet Dr. Al Alam and her supervisor, Dr. Warburton. Dr. Al Alam allowed me to listen in on a conversation between her, Dr. Warburton, and a mathematician as they debated how human lung morphogenesis is compared to mouse lung morphogenesis. The conversation acted as a segue into what my project will be, which is analyzing pulmonary neuroendocrine cells to determine at what point during human gestation they differentiate, as well as what their function is in the human lung.

Poster Session!
Today there was the CHLA 21st Annual Poster Session, which is an event that features many of the research centers' current projects, and is actually very similar in style to Peddie's Science Night. I was fortunate enough to talk with some of the undergraduate and graduate students with posters and hear about their research.

Dr. Mataric's Presentation
Afterwards there was a keynote speaker, Dr. Mataric, who gave a presentation on socially assistive robotics, which is essentially how specific robots can help facilitate personal growth and motivation. Dr. Mataric currently is working towards developing robots that help motivate children with autism and obesity, as well as stroke patients, to work on their rehabilitation. She delivered an outstanding presentation and I look forward to hearing about her research in the future!
